Filip finally found some pity towards Lucius and lifted the curse. Lucius fell to the ground, shaking. Filip snorted and vanished in the cottage. Lucius raised his head and looked at Agnieszka. Corners of the woman's mouth were slightly risen, suggesting a little smile.
'Agnieszka, I... I...' Lucius panted.
'Oh, don't pretend, Filip went light on you' Agnieszka shrugged. 'Get up and come in.'
Lucius stood up, dazzled. Agnieszka let her son torture him - and now she was inviting him to come in? Not that he had much of a choice though. He followed the woman to the cottage and when she pointed him a chair, he sat down. She sat down opposite him.
'Well, I'm glad you finally met your son' she stated. Lucius shivered again.
'Aren't you worried that he may be punished for...' he started, but Agnieszka waved her hand in a silencing gesture.
'You don't know the laws here. We are allowed to do anything - anything - to intruders. Worst punishment Filip ever got for using the Cruciatus curse on an intruder was being sent to bed without any food at all.'
'Shouldn't you put any warnings?'
'Oh, there are warnings, you just didn't see them as you were Apparating. See, Filip yesterday had to alter this one a bit' Agnieszka pointed at a bright yellow board with red text "Current record of being under Cruciatus curse without going insane is 61 minutes 17 seconds. Trespass here to attempt to break it".
The numbers were clearly freshly painted.
'Previous record was established three months ago, it was 59 minutes 2 seconds' Agnieszka explained.
'He's only seventeen and he can cast an Unforgivable Curse?' Lucius whispered. 'Wouldn't believe if he didn't use it on me...'
'Well, he's a very clever boy...'
Suddenly Lucius touched Agnieszka's hand.
'Please... could you tell me... why you are here, and - and only with the boy?'
Agnieszka chuckled.
'Oh, I can. Yet you are definitely going to pay for this. So, let's start from the very beginning... from the day I found out I was pregnant with a Death Eater's bastard. Oh, of course I couldn't continue my auror training carrying a baby in my womb! So I told my mother, and there could be only one result of it: disowning. I lost my heritage - I lost my safe home - I lost my blood nobility. For a good few months, I was not a noble. For some time, I was also homeless - I was so worried, so worried that I'd miscarry...
'Wait' Lucius interrupted, 'You said you weren't a noble for a few months, so you regained your nobility?'
'Yes and no' Agnieszka chuckled again and this made her even more familiar - she was nearly always smiling eighteen years ago. 'Once lost, blood nobility can never be regained. But I got something better... merit nobility.'
'What's that?'
'That's what every Great House in Poland started with: a great merit for Poland, for polish magic or something like this, makes one allowed to found a new Great House. In the past, greatest merits were done at wars, and now the most common one is giving birth to a Sourcerer.'
'Are you telling me that...'
'Yes. Filip is a Sourcerer. And quite a powerful one. And, well, that's the reason there's no one else here, just Filip and me. Who would like to be a stepfather for a Death Eater's bastard?'
'But would anyone know Filip is mine?' Lucius frowned.
'They would know he's a Death Eater's child. He inherited the Mark - it looks much paler than yours, but it is there, on his arm. I don't know how... I guess it has something to do with his sourcerery.'
'Sourcerery, yes! Why wouldn't anyone want to be stepfather for a Sourcerer? Wouldn't it be great pride and...'
'No. Because if I got married and had more kids - they could come out quite ordinary. And then the stepfather could treat Filip badly. Of course, a mother of a Sourcerer is a good choice - but only after the said Sourcerer leaves home. So, back to the story... when we found out Filip was a Sourcerer, my parents decided to support me financially - they called it a "gift", but I know them too well. Nevermind... and so we live here. Filip knew you would come - and you should appreciate that he learned the Cruciatus curse just for you.'
Second chapter. Will post the links to other when I'll have more stable internet connection.
